Used Doosan Equipment Inspection: Excavators, Forklifts & Air Compressors

If you're buying a used Doosan excavator, a Bobcat Doosan forklift, or even a portable air compressor, stop obsessing over the hour meter. The single best predictor of future repair costs is maintenance history. In the last four years I've reviewed over 800 machines as a quality and brand compliance manager. The ones that hurt their owners were almost never the ones with the highest hours. They were the ones that skipped grease intervals, ran air filters past their life, and let water sit in the hydraulic system.

Preventive maintenance is cheaper than any repair. It's not a cliché — it's the whole game. I've seen Doosan excavators with 8,000 hours run smoother than units with half that history, simply because someone greased the pins and changed the oil on schedule.

Why I'm qualified

I'm the person who signs off on a machine before it goes to a customer. That sounds boring, but it has a way of making you care about details. I review roughly 200 units a year — excavators, wheel loaders, telehandlers, forklifts, generators, and air compressors. I've rejected more first deliveries than I'd like to admit. In Q1 2024, about 11% of the units we were ready to ship had to go back because of something I caught in the final audit.

That has a real cost. A loose hydraulic fitting cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed a customer's site work. A missed air compressor water separator caused a full rebuild of a pneumatic tool package. Neither was a design flaw. Both were skipped checks.

What actually fails in the field

From the outside, a clean machine looks like a well-maintained machine. The reality is often different. I've seen a showroom-clean excavator with hydraulic oil that smelled burnt and looked like coffee. The operator had washed the undercarriage but never checked the sight glass. Meanwhile, I've seen beat-up machines with dirt on them run perfectly because the owner kept a grease log.

Here's the thing: most machines don't fail from one catastrophic event. They fail from contaminated fluids and dried-out moving parts. The engine block in many older Doosan forklifts is a Mazda unit — the same engine family you'll find in some Mazda truck applications — and those engines are genuinely tough. They'll run with low coolant longer than they should. That's exactly why you can't trust the engine to tell you it's sick. You have to look.

The checklist I use on every used Doosan machine

I've built this checklist after rejecting too many units that “looked fine.” It's not a full mechanical inspection, but it's the 15 minutes that saves you from buying a repair project. Grease. Oil. Filters. That's it. Not fancy. Just deliberate.

  1. Fluids first, not the seat. Pull the engine oil dipstick, smell it, and rub it between your fingers. Then check the hydraulic oil sight glass. On a Doosan excavator, the hydraulic oil should be clear enough to see the level without a flashlight. If it looks like chocolate milk, water has gotten in. Walk away.

The mast chains can look fine from the outside, but if the pivot pins are dry, you'll be replacing bushings in six months.

What about a concrete mixer?

Doosan doesn't make concrete mixers, so I can't give you brand-specific advice on that machine. But I've inspected enough mixed fleets to tell you the same rule holds: the drum's hydraulic motor and gearbox oil matter more than the drum's paint. A concrete mixer spends its life in wet, dusty conditions. If the previous owner didn't wash the drum regularly, the concrete residue holds moisture against the metal. That's how gearboxes fail.

How to use an air compressor without breaking it

The newer electric and Stage V models have fewer fluids and more sensors, so the list shortens.

One more thing: I've never understood why some sellers won't let buyers take a sample of the hydraulic oil. It's a small request, and any honest owner should say yes. If they hesitate, that's a sign. Trust it.

In hindsight, I should have pushed back on a batch of air compressors last summer. I approved them with a minor documentation gap because the customer was waiting. We fixed it later, but it cost twice as much as it would have upfront. Prevention over cure. Every time.
